Description

25 South Main Street in Wigtown is an early 19th century, two-storey, three-bay house that has been altered to include a shop at the ground level and raised for an attic later in the 19th century. The building is rendered with contrasting dressings and features a base course cornice on the original house and an eaves course at the attic level. The shop entrance is centrally located with broad, two-leaf doors flanked by shop windows, and there is a pend door to the outer right. On the first floor, there are three windows. The house has gabled stone dormers from the later 19th century that break the eaves, featuring ashlar coping, bracketed skewputts, blank apex shields, and ball finials. The windows are plate glass sash and case, with raised painted bands around all openings. The building also has cast-iron rainwater goods. At the rear, there is a two-storey stepped wing with a single-storey lean-to beyond. The doors have letterbox fanlights, and the roof is covered with graduated grey slates, featuring mutual gable stacks and a sandstone ridge.
