Description

The Old Market Cross in The Square, Wigtown, is likely from the 18th century and was repaired in the 19th century. It features a stone shaft that stands 10 feet high and has a diameter of 18 inches, with a slight curve known as entasis. The shaft is set on a simple square base and has a band two-thirds of the way up, along with a neck ring. At the top, there is a much-weathered square block sundial that has dials on each face, although the worn Roman numerals and gnomons are missing. The cross is crowned with a molded hemispherical finial, which was damaged in 1991.
