Description

The Market Cross in Middleham is a medieval structure, possibly dating from the 14th century. It is made of stone and features four worn square steps. At the top, there is a weathered hexagonal column capital that serves as a base for an octagonal ashlar column, which has a plain cornice. The cross is topped with a 20th-century apex stone and a wrought-iron cross. The market and yearly fair were granted to Ralph Neville in 1389. A Celtic-style cross-head from around 1920 is now located in the parish church. The Market Cross is also scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
