Description

5, 7, and 9 Marischal Street is a classical townhouse built in the later 18th century. It is a three-storey building with an attic and basement, featuring five bays and a public house on the ground floor due to its location on a sloping site. The exterior is constructed from Loanhead granite ashlar with raised margins and includes a moulded eaves course. The first and second floors have regular fenestration, while the mansarded roof is topped with a central five-light box dormer.

The ground floor public house has a symmetrical frontage with a stugged ashlar basecourse. It features large tripartite fixed pane windows on either side of a recessed two-leaf door, with an additional recessed entrance located at the far left. The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows and is covered with grey slates. The right gable has ashlar coped skews, and there is a large granite ashlar ridge stack with a later red brick upper section and clay cans. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron.

Inside, the Blackfriars Public House, formerly known as The Royal Oak, occupies the ground and first floors of the buildings numbered 1-3 and 5-9 Marischal Street. The interior features a 19th-century gantry with later additions and alterations.
