SHEPTON MONTAGUE CP ST63SE 5/281 Milestone on A359 at NGR ST 6672 3165

Milestone. Probably late C18. Doulting stone pillar, chamfered leading edges, rounded top, about 340 mm wide, 220 mm thick, standing about 800 mm high; Cast iron plaque bolted on, 250 mm wide and 310 mm high, reading: "Bruton 2" in raised Roman lettering. This was one of the first roads to be taken over by the Bruton Turnpike Trust in 1756.
