Description

Hadspen Cottage is a cottage, probably dating from the 17th century. It is constructed of Cary stone rubble with a thatched roof, featuring plain gables and brick chimney stacks at the ends and between the bays. The cottage is single-storey with an attic, and has an irregular arrangement of six bays. Most of the windows are horizontal bar casements, though some are steel casements, all set under exposed timber lintels. There are attic windows in bays 1, 3, 5 and 6, set into the thatch. A plain door is located between bays 4 and the south side of the cottage. Inside, the structure includes scroll stop chamfer beams and a collar truss roof. A fireplace is present in the west gable wall, featuring a chamfered deep timber beam, ovens and a possible first-floor bacon curing chamber. It is thought the site may have been that of a former watermill.
