Description

Milestone on the A371, likely from the 18th century. It is made of Doulting stone and features a cast iron plaque. The pillar measures approximately 400 mm wide, 201 mm thick, and stands about 800 mm tall, with squared faces and sides and a rounded top. The plaque is around 350 mm wide and 130 mm deep, featuring part roundels at the top and bottom, each with a diameter of 160 mm. The plaque displays plain raised letters indicating "11 SHERBORNE - ANSFORD 3/4," with the numbers located in the roundels. The road from Sherborne to Ansford was taken over by the Sherborne Turnpike Trust in 1753.
