Description
This milestone, likely from the 18th century, is located on the A371. It is made of Doulting stone and features a cast iron plaque. The pillar measures approximately 400 mm wide, 200 mm thick, and about 900 mm tall, with squared faces and sides and a rough rounded top. The plaque is about 350 mm wide and 130 mm deep, with rounded sections at the top and bottom measuring 160 mm in diameter. It displays the distance in plain raised letters: "10 SHERBORNE - ANSFORD 1 3/4," with the numbers located in the roundels. The stone may have been reused, or the plaque may be a later addition, as there is worn incised lettering that reads "11 FROME" (which is covered by the plaque) and "TO BATH 30 TO BRISTOL." The road from Sherborne to Ansford was taken over by the Sherborne Turnpike Trust in 1753.
