Description

Hadspen Farm House is a 17th-century farmhouse constructed from Cary stone with Doulting stone dressings. It features a Welsh slate roof between coped gables and has brick chimney stacks at the ends and in the middle. The building has a "U"-shaped plan, with the northeast elevation comprising two storeys and four bays, including a projecting two-storey porch bay. The structure partly rests on a Keinton stone plinth and showcases reserved chamfer mullioned windows, with four lights featuring a king mullion below and three lights above, all equipped with internal vertical iron bars and iron frame opening casements. A continuous string course runs over the first two bays and wraps around the porch. The first-floor windows have separate labels, while the porch opening is framed by an ovolo-mould surround and a flat arch. Above the porch is a two-light reserved chamfer mullioned window set into the gable, which is topped with a carved finial. The southeast gable contains two additional mullioned windows, with casement windows beneath a timber lintel in the attic. On the northwest gable, part of a large oven has been removed, and a 20th-century brick chimney stack has been added. The interior has not been seen, but it is reported to include ovolo door frames, scroll stop beams, some four-centre arched fireplaces, and a wood newel winding staircase. The roof is collar trussed, mostly with tenoned joints.
