Description
The Wesleyan Methodist Church, built around 1840, is located on the south side of Upper High Street in Castle Cary. It is constructed from Cary stone rubble with a Doulting ashlar facade and features a Welsh slate roof that is hipped at the south end and gabled to the north, topped with a prominent metal ridge ventilator. The church has two-storey elevations with three bays on each side. Notable architectural details include a plinth, band courses, and a swept gable, along with octagonal corner piers that have bell-shaped tops. The center bay projects slightly and contains semi-circular arched leaded windows in plain openings. There is a large panelled door set in a plain semi-circular arch, which is topped by a Gothic style traceried fanlight. A bell-shaped plaque with the word "Wesleyan" is located on the gable. The sides of the church feature two tiers of matching windows. Although the interior was not seen, the church occupies a dominant position on High Street, making it an important element of the streetscape.
