Description

This bank building dates to circa 1900. It is constructed of Doulting stone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof, stepped coped gables, and brick chimney stacks. The design is in an Art Nouveau style and is two storeys high with attics, comprising three bays, with the two outer bays projecting slightly. Features include a plinth, rusticated quoins, an interrupted cornice and balustrade. The sash windows are of 12 panes, arranged in pairs within the outer bays, set in rusticated elliptical arched surrounds with swan-neck hoods, more pronounced at the lower level. Glazing bars have been removed from the lower window of the first bay. The central bay has a larger three-unit display window featuring elaborately carved timber mullions. A central pitched roof dormer window is present. The doorway in the second bay, approached by four steps, has large three-panelled doors set within a surround extending between the outer bay projections, with flanking pilasters topped with Byzantine capitals. A plain flat hood with a swan-neck balustrade and bell-capped end piers sits above the doorway, mirrored by similar piers on the corners. A monogram of S.B.Co and ‘Estd 1826’ is carved into the centre panel of the parapet, referencing Stuckeys Bank, which originated in Langport and had branches throughout Somerset before merging into National Westminster Bank. The interior was not inspected. The building’s imposing facade is noted for its streetscape value, particularly in relation to the Market Place.
