Description
The Old Bakehouse is a house and shop located on the north side of High Street in Castle Cary, dating from the mid-19th century. It is constructed of Cary stone rubble and features a Welsh slate roof supported by abutments, along with a brick chimney stack. The building has two storeys and two bays. On the upper level, there are paired plain sash windows set beneath timber lintels. The ground floor has flat-roofed angled bay windows on either side of a four-panelled door, which is topped by a rectangular fanlight in a plain opening. Above the door hangs a sign on a wrought-iron bracket. In front of the building, there are wrought-iron railings approximately 900 mm high, supported by alternate uprights and featuring 'S' scrolls, with returns to the ends and the doorway. The interior has not been seen. The building is included in the listing primarily for its group and streetscape value.
