Description
This milestone, located on Brewham Road in Bruton, dates from the late 18th century. It is made of Bath stone and features a cast iron plaque that is plugged onto it. The stone measures approximately 320 millimeters wide, 250 millimeters thick, and stands about 500 millimeters high, with a rounded top that is damaged on the right side. The plaque is 320 millimeters wide and 260 millimeters high, with a shouldered semi-circular top that has a diameter of 280 millimeters. The plaque displays early incised lettering that reads "BRUTON" in a curved head and "1 Mile" on the main part of the plaque. The Bruton Trust, established in 1756, took responsibility for this road in 1793.
