Description
Milestone on Druley Hill, dating from the late 18th century. This milestone is made of Bath stone and features a cast iron plaque that is plugged onto it. The stone measures approximately 350 millimeters wide, 200 millimeters thick, and stands about 600 millimeters high, with a roughly rounded top. The plaque is 320 millimeters by 260 millimeters high, with a shouldered semi-circular top that has a diameter of 280 millimeters. The early incised lettering on the plaque reads "BRUTON" in a curved head and "4 MILES" within the plaque itself. This milestone is a well-preserved example, and the Bruton Trust, founded in 1756, became responsible for the Bruton to Warminster road in 1793.
