Description
Durslade Farmhouse is an 18th-century farmhouse located on the east side of Dropping Lane in Bruton. It is constructed from local stone rubble with Doulting stone dressings and features a plain clay tile roof with coped gables. The building has a stone chimney with moulded caps and is designed in an "L" shape, consisting of two storeys and a three-bay southwest elevation. The outer bays have twelve-pane sash windows set in architraved surrounds, while the central bay contains a plain door in an architrave, topped by a plain plaque featuring the carved arms of Berkeley of Stratton. The return wing on the south side has three bays with wide pointed arched windows featuring "Y" tracery on both levels, and there are plain cambered arched doorways between the bays.
The front of the farmhouse was added or rebuilt by Sir Charles Berkeley in the mid-18th century, possibly designed by Nathaniel Ireson. The rear may represent a late 18th-century restoration of the original structure. The farmhouse was first recorded in 1698 and is believed to have been one of the manor farms, later acquired by the Hoare family of Stourhead.
