Description
The former Church School and Headmaster's House, now serving as the King's School Carpenters shop, was built in 1856. It is constructed from local stone rubble with Doulting stone dressings and features a Welsh slate roof between coped gables, along with stone chimney stacks. The building consists of a single-storey school and a two-storey house.
The street-facing elevation has two bays; the first bay is half gabled and includes a bell turret supported by a buttress with offsets on the east side. It features a four-centre arch doorway with a fine wood gate in Gothic style and a blind window panel with a blank shield above the doorway. The second bay is wider and gabled, showcasing a four-light pointed arch window with 15th-century style tracery.
On the east side, which faces the playground—the site of the former National School—there are four bays, each with a separate gable. There is a chimney breast between the first and second bays and a buttress between the second and third bays. The fourth bay, which was the house, projects slightly and has two-light curvilinear traceried windows high into the gables of the first and second bays. The window in the third bay is similar but smaller, with added sidelights, and there is a four-centre arched doorway low to the left. The fourth bay features plain cusped paired lancet windows. The interiors were not seen, but the building is noted for its importance in the street scene.
