Description

Old House, King's School is a free school building with origins dating back to the 16th century. It is constructed from local stone rubble, with some parts rendered, and features Doulting stone dressings. The roof is made of stone slate and has plain gables, with a rebuilt brick chimney stack at the southwest end. The building has a "T"-plan layout and is two storeys high, showcasing a five-bay front elevation.

The exterior includes a plinth and hollow chamfered mullioned windows with four-centre arched heads, some of which have incised spandrils. The first-floor windows vary in design, with two, two, one, three, and three lights, while the ground floor features a four-light window in bays one and two, a two-light window in bay four, and an off-centre four-light window in bay five. None of the windows have hoods, and there is a notable entrance doorway in bay three, which has a part-glazed door set in a three-centre arch framed by flat Doric pilasters, topped with a full entablature and pediment.

To the southwest, there is a plain stone and stone slated extension with a part hipped roof. The northeast side includes a 19th-century extension with a hipped Welsh slate roof, featuring two bays and small two-light openings adorned with flamboyant tracery under square labels across two levels. The upper level has been adapted to create four-light mullioned and transomed windows. The rear of the building has various 19th-century details, including a turret porch, a gable bell turret, and a collection of matching buildings.

Late 20th-century buildings attached to the northwest side are not included in the listing. Although the interior has not been seen, it is believed that the rooms to the right and left of the entrance passage are original. The heavy undecorated hall screen remains intact, and the northeast portion, dating from 1834, incorporates an Elizabethan timber lobby. The roof of the main building features unblackened trusses with tenoned purlins and curved windbraces.
