Description
The Memorial Hall at King's School is a school hall built between 1919 and 1924 by architect A J Pictor FRIBA from Bath and Bruton. It is constructed from local stone that has been cut and squared, with dressings made of Doulting stone. The roof is covered with Westmorland slates and features openwork finials on the gables. The building has a "U"-shaped plan, with the southeast wing rising to two storeys. The main hall consists of seven bays, while the projecting wings have four bays each, with an additional southern projection for the southeast wing. There is a single-storey flat-roofed corridor connecting the wings.
Designed in a 16th-century Gothic style, the northeast facade includes small two-light windows in the corridor, along with a central projecting porch that features a four-centre moulded archway set in a flat-headed recess, complete with carved spandrels and a plaque above, topped by a raked parapet. The rest of the building has offset buttresses between the bays, but none at the corners. The hall is adorned with three-light pointed arched traceried windows, and the two-storey angled bays at the east end of the projections have four-light transomed windows. The Gothic detailing throughout is consistent and well executed. Inside, the hall showcases impressive timberwork in the roof. This building is noted as a good example of its type and is said to be inspired by Wadham College, Oxford, reflecting the school's historical connections.
