Description

Hayley Cottage is a detached cottage, now divided and extended, likely built in the 18th century. It is constructed from local lias stone that has been cut and squared, with asbestos-cement slates replacing the original thatch, featuring plain overhung gables and brick chimney stacks. The cottage is two storeys high and consists of five bays, with Hayley Cottage occupying bays one to three, while bay five is a 1980s addition designed to match the original structure.

The cottage has small three-light horizontal bar casement windows above, with those in bays one to four being of an older design. Below, there are three-light small-pane casements in bays one and three, which are set under timber lintels. Between these bays is a 20th-century timber-framed porch with a hipped tiled roof, now infilled with stone, featuring an early 20th-century glazed door. To the left of lower bay four, there is another 20th-century glazed door that shares a lintel with a two-light cross-glazed casement window. Bay five has a 20th-century horizontal bar casement window.

To the west of Hayley Cottage, there is a Keinton stone plank wall, approximately 600 mm high, extending the full length of the boundary with a central gateway. There is also a later return rubble stone wall on the north side. This boundary wall is a rare survival in the village and contributes to the setting of the house and the overall streetscape. The interiors of the cottage have not been seen.
