Description
Queen Camel Health Centre is a house that has been converted into a health centre, originally built in the early 19th century with significant additions made to the rear in the 20th century. The building is constructed from local lias stone that has been cut and squared, topped with a Welsh slate roof that features stepped coped gables, gabletted and ball finials, and brick chimney stacks. The east elevation is two storeys high with five hips, and there is an added window between the upper bays one and two. The sash windows are set in slightly segmental keystoned arches and consist of 16 panels each. The original doorway in the lower bay three has been blocked and replaced with a matching window, but an ornate cast-iron open porch in a vaguely classical style remains, although it is now roofless. There is a considerable extension at the rear of the building, as well as a single-storey extension against the south gable. The interior has not been seen but is understood to have not been severely altered.
Two metres east of the house, there is a low wall made of Ham stone ashlar, topped with 19th-century cast iron railings that have fleurs-de-lys tops and stand about one metre high. These railings feature curved braces and a matching gate located opposite the porch near the south-east corner, along with short return stone walls that have swept copings. This wall and railings contribute to both the setting of the house and the overall streetscape.
