Description
Greystones is a detached cottage dating to the very early 19th century. It is located on the west side of Church Street, in Babcary. Built of local grey lias stone, cut and squared, the cottage has a triple roll clay tile roof with stepped coped gables and brick end chimney stacks. The cottage is two storeys high and has three bays. It features original small, horizontal bar casement windows in heavy frames. The lower windows are three-light with voussoired, slightly segmental arched heads, while the upper windows are two-light. The central door is in a plain opening with a margined toplight and reeded surrounds to the lower panels; extensions have been added to both sides.
Inside, the original staircase and layout remain, although a 20th-century rear extension has been added to the living room. A wide fireplace with ovens and cheeks of single Keinton stone slabs is a significant feature, along with boarded doors and a reused panelled door, likely from the 18th century. Some stone flag floors and a timber-framed partition are also present. The original, simple, untrussed roof frame, originally for thatch, survives beneath the current roof. An extension to the north gable incorporates earlier work. The property's first recorded transfer of ownership occurred in 1812.
