Description

Bowers Farmhouse is an 18th-century farmhouse, with later modifications. It is constructed from local lias stone, squared and cut, with a double Roman clay tile roof and stone chimney stacks. The building has a roughly L-shaped layout, two storeys, and four bays originally, though a projecting four-bay wing now obscures one bay. The projecting wing has stepped coped gables at its west end, and to bays 1 and 3 on the south side. It features casement windows: three-light below and two-light above. The lower windows are set within segmental arched openings with voussoirs and keystones. A boarded door is set within a matching opening in bay 2, and a simple single-light casement window is found in bay 4. The main elevation has two-light small-pane casements in bays 2 and the upper bay 3, and a twelve-pane sash window in bay 4, all beneath timber lintols. A six-panelled door is located in a timber and tiled open porch in the lower bay 3. The interior retains stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, two open fireplaces, and flagstone floors, though it has been considerably altered.
