Description

This milestone, located at the National Grid Reference ST 5496 2852, is likely from the early 19th century. It is made of ham stone and cast iron. The stone slab measures approximately 500 millimeters wide and 150 millimeters thick, standing about 750 millimeters above the ground. Attached to the stone is a cast iron plaque that is about 350 millimeters wide and 100 millimeters deep, featuring added semi-circles above and below. The plaque displays the inscriptions "11/Shepton Mallet/Ilchester 4" in raised Roman capitals. This road has been maintained by the Ilchester Trust since 1753.
