Description

This milestone, located at the National Grid Reference ST 6944 2654, is likely from the 19th century. It is made of Doulting stone and features a cast iron plaque. The stone measures approximately 400 millimeters wide, 250 millimeters thick, and 800 millimeters tall, with a rounded top. The plaque is about 400 millimeters wide and 500 millimeters deep, boasting a shouldered semi-circular top and a double ogee base. It is inscribed with "Wincanton" on the curve and "Sherborne 8" in incised letters. This road was maintained by the Wincanton Trust, possibly starting in 1818.
