Description

This is a milestone located at the National Grid Reference ST 7270 2917, likely dating from the early 19th century. It is made of stone, possibly from Chilmark, and features a cast iron plaque. The pillar measures approximately 500mm by 400mm at the base and tapers slightly, standing about 1 metre tall. The plaque is about 450mm wide and 600mm high, with a shouldered segmental top and a double ogee-shaped base. It displays the inscriptions 'Wincanton 1 Hindon 13' in recessed lower case lettering. This milestone marks the road from Mere to Milbourne Port, which was taken over by the Wincanton Trust in 1756.
