Description
Charlton House is a house from the early 19th century, possibly built on an earlier structure. It is believed to have been designed by a member of the Bastard family from Blandford. The main facade is made of Doulting stone ashlar, while the rest of the building features local coursed stone rubble with ashlar dressings. The roof is hipped and covered with Welsh slate, and there are rendered brick chimney stacks.
The main block of the house has two storeys and five bays, while the extension has two storeys with an attic and two bays. The main block features a plinth and a timber eaves cornice with a hidden gutter. It has 12-pane sash windows set in plain raised surrounds. The third bay includes a two-storey projecting porch with a semi-circular archway and a string course above, flanked by two shell head niches. Above this is a plain three-light mullioned and transomed window, and a low, coped parapet that slopes to an open pediment in the center. The extension has groups of three four-pane sash windows in plain ashlar surrounds with segmental arched heads, along with pitched roof dormer windows.
There is a wing wall on the west side and another extension on the east. The main block was reconstructed around 1810, while the porch and east extension were added in 1903, as noted by an inscription inside the porch.
