Description
Lower Church Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1738, constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, which is now colourwashed, set on a local stone rubble base. It features a plain clay tile roof that is half hipped at the west end and has a plain gable at the east end, with brick end and intermediate chimney stacks. The building has a "T"-plan, stands two storeys with an attic, and consists of four bays, with the west bay possibly being an early addition.
The south facade includes a plinth and a band course, with segmental arched windows that have what appear to be original frames fitted with early 20th-century small pane casements below and matching flat-headed windows above, all of which are two-light. There is a brick and tile porch at bay three, featuring an early part-glazed outer door and a plain 18th-century six-panel inner door.
At the rear, there is a 18th-century projection that is half hipped, with leaded attic windows suggesting the original form of the remainder of the house. Inside, the main room has a fireplace with an arched timber beam and stop-chamfered beams in the ceiling. The roof frame is a collar truss design, with one collar signed: W W 1738. The farmhouse was originally part of the Ilchester Estate, and the bricks may have originated from a small kiln in Shepton Montague.
