Description

This is a milestone located on the south side of the A303 in Mere, dating from the mid-18th century. It is made of sandstone and features a cast iron plate. The milestone has a block shape with a rounded top, measuring approximately 1 meter high, 400 millimeters wide, and 300 millimeters deep. The shaped plate displays the distances to Wincanton (9 miles) and Hindon (5 miles). Additionally, there is a bench mark on the top of the milestone. It is set back from the edge of the road by about 3 meters.
