Description

Milestone located on the south side of the A303 in Mere, dating from the mid-18th century, marks the Turnpike Road from London to Exeter. It is made of sandstone and features a cast iron plate. The milestone has a block shape with a rounded top, measuring 400 mm wide and 300 mm deep. Currently, it is partially sunk into the road embankment, with only the top half of the attached plate visible, which reads "WINCANTON 8 HINDON 6." The stone is positioned high in the embankment, above a road sign indicating "local services," suggesting it was reset during road widening.
