Description
The Methodist Church, located on North Street in Mere, was built in 1846, with a schoolroom added in 1874 and interior modifications made in the late 19th century. The church is constructed of rock-faced, coursed and squared limestone with a Welsh slate roof, while the schoolroom has a plain tile roof. The main church building is a simple square design with a gabled front, featuring raised coping. The front facade has two storeys and three windows. The ground floor has two small arched windows flanking a central pair of plank doors surmounted by a fanlight. The first floor has three tall arched windows, all with central bars, horizontal bars, and margin bars within concentric, flush voussoirs and a single set-back. The doorway is framed by recessed orders with an impost block. Above the central first-floor window is a small panel inscribed "Methodist Church 1846". The building has a slight offset plinth, a mid-level string course, a coped gable with a frieze band, and clasp buttresses with two offsets at the front corners. The side elevations feature two tall arched windows similar to those on the front. The schoolroom, which is at a lower level, is aligned to the north and has a central arched door flanked by arched windows. The north gable end has a large Venetian window, all of which are embellished with leading. Inside, the church has a panelled gallery supported by two slender cast-iron columns, pitch-pine pews, an elaborate central reading desk, a pulpit on the left, and an organ on the right. The chapel remains a simple, largely unaltered building.
