Description
Winchester Cottage is a detached cottage located on Main Road, likely dating from the 17th century and modified over time. It is constructed of local lias and Ham stone mixed coursed rubble, topped with a thatched roof featuring a plain gable on the north side and a long hip on the south side, along with a brick chimney stack. The cottage is single-storey with an attic and consists of three bays.
In the first bay, there is a three-light leaded casement window beneath a timber lintel, while the third bay features a three-light hollow-chamfer mullioned window set in a recess, lacking a label. Above these windows, there are two-light small-pane casements integrated into the roof. The lower bay two has a 20th-century boarded door with a sidelight, sheltered by a thatched hood supported by wrought-iron brackets. There is also a lean-to structure against the south gable, which has a boarded door in a heavy frame. The rear of the cottage has two extensions.
Although the interior was not seen, it is reported to contain chamfered beams and trusses with slightly cambered collars, and it was originally designed with a two-room cross-passage plan.
