Description
St Francis is a detached house located on Main Road, dating from the 17th century. It is constructed from local lias stone that is roughly cut and squared, with ham stone dressings. The house features double Roman clay tile roofs with plain gables, although the roofline has been altered. There are brick chimney stacks. The building has an 'L' plan and consists of two storeys with two bays. The first bay has a projecting gable, which includes a three-light chamfered mullioned window set in a recess with a label at the first floor level, while the lower part is blind. The second bay contains two-light small-pane casement windows, with the lower window set under a stone lintel, and there is another window in the north return of the first bay. In the angle of the two bays, there is a 20th-century boarded door in a heavy frame, sheltered by an open timber and pantiled porch. Additionally, there is another mullioned window in the south wall and an extensive pantiled outbuilding at the rear. The interior has not been seen, but an illustration indicates that it is a 17th-century two-unit house with a single storey and attic, set at right angles to the road, with an 18th-century two-storey addition on the north side.
