Description
The Lamb and Flag Inn is a 17th-century inn, likely a rebuild of an earlier dwelling, with alterations made in the early 19th and 20th centuries. It features slobbered rubble construction and a half-hipped Bridgwater patent tile roof, with a large brick stack located in the fourth bay on the left. The building has a two-cell plan with a cross passage and a two-storey porch facing east. The south gable end has been extended, and there is an outshot at the rear.
The inn stands two storeys high, with the end bay on the left beyond the stack being unlit. The front has 20th-century windows flanking a full-height gabled porch supported by timber posts, which is infilled with brick. The ground floor has 20th-century windows flanking the porch and a plank door in the left end bay. The right return features raking buttresses, while the left return has two 3-light ovolo moulded mullioned windows and a 20th-century window in the outshot at the rear.
Inside, only part of the interior is visible. There is an early 19th-century stick stair that blocks the passage, which now serves as a lobby. A right axial chamfered beam with scroll and run-out stops is present, and in the former kitchen, there is a chamfered lintel above the fireplace, along with remains of a curing chamber and/or stair beside it. The inn has been operating since the 18th century, and likely even earlier.
