Description
The George and Dragon Inn is an inn that features a late 18th century refronting of a timber-framed building that dates back to the 16th century or earlier. It has a roughcast exterior on a high painted brick and rubble stone basement, topped with a half-hipped roof made of Bridgwater tiles, and includes a ridge stack and an east end stack. The building stands two storeys tall with an attic over a full-height basement.
The front facade has small-paned triple casement windows, with a three-window range to the left and a four-panel centre door that is sheltered by a timber hood supported by brackets. There are eight stone steps leading up to the door, accompanied by an iron railing. To the left of the front door, there is a blocked door framed in timber architrave, while to the right, there is a one-window range with similar windows. Cellar doors are located to the right of the steps. An addition from the 20th century can be found at the east end of the building.
At the rear, heavy square framing is exposed, revealing the line of the original roof. Inside, there is a heavy chamfered and stopped spine beam over the through passage. The room to the west of the passage features a heavy spine beam with two bars to the chamfer-stop and a large ashlar moulded Tudor-arched fireplace with a moulded stone shelf. There is a fielded panelled door leading to the staircase, and a possible foot of a cruck beam is visible in the front wall near the partition to the passage. The west end room contains an unusually moulded spine beam with two ovolo mouldings and carved rosette stops.
