Description

The Tayler Monument is a chest tomb located at the north-east corner of the churchyard of the Church of St Matthew. It dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of ashlar stone. The tomb features slab sides and fluted quarter-columns at the corners, which have decorative paterae at their mid-length. It has a moulded base and capstone. The side plaques have incised borders and rebated angles, flanked by similar decorative panels. The original decoration was blackened. The north side of the monument bears an inscription commemorating Robert Tayler, who died in 1827.
