Description
The Old Farmhouse is a 17th-century house located in Blagdon Hill, Pitminster. It is constructed of roughcast and slobbered rubble, topped with a steeply pitched double Roman tiled roof and features painted brick stacks at the gable ends. The building has a two-cell plan with a cross passage, an L-plan outshut, and a rear extension, along with an adjoining barn.
The farmhouse stands two stories high and has three bays. The windows are all 20th-century wooden casements, with two-light windows on the first floor and a tiny two-light wooden light for the former stair. On the ground floor, there are two and four-light casements flanking a central 20th-century porch, which has a ribbed plank door with a light. The left side has an unlit wall of the barn that abuts the steeply pitched triple Roman tiled roof, which has a weatherboarded gable end. The right side features a small wooden light for the stair on the ground floor, and the wall to the right of the stack projects as an L-plan outshot with French windows and a 19th-century leaded casement above. The rear includes a 20th-century extension with a four-light steeply chamfered wooden mullioned window.
Although the interior was not seen, it is reported to contain stud and panel screens in the cross passage, chamfered beams with scroll stops, and the former kitchen to the right has a chamfered lintel over the fireplace and remains of a bread oven. The roof features collar beam trusses, and there are small cornice moldings in two rooms on the upper storey.
