Description
Woodbrook Farmhouse is a late medieval farmhouse that has been converted into a dwelling. It was ceiled in the 16th century, with a barn added later and the roof raised on the facade. In the late 20th century, the building was refenestrated and restored. The structure is made of random rubble local stone and features a thatched roof, with a lean-to addition on the left gable end. There is an inserted stack on the right gable end, positioned to the right of the cross passage, and a lateral stack at the rear that is masked by the barn.
The farmhouse is L-shaped and faces south, consisting of two storeys and four bays. All windows are 20th-century casements, and the lean-to on the left projects slightly forward. The entrance is located in the second bay from the left. Although the interior was not seen, it is said to contain chamfered beams with step and run-out stops in the hall and outer room. The outer room features a semi-circular fireplace recess against the rear wall, with inserted stairs to the right, and the hall has a fireplace with a chamfered lintel.
On the upper storey, there are two pairs of smoke blackened jointed cruck trusses, and evidence suggests that the east gable end was originally half-hipped. The house is notably wide at 20 feet and is one of the few examples in Somerset with a medieval half-hipped roof.
