Description
Lowton Manor is a house built in the early 18th century, with alterations likely made in the 1920s. It is constructed from squared and coursed chert rubble and other local stones, featuring red sandstone rubble quoins and window jambs, as well as chert stone voussoirs. The roof is hipped and covered with West Somerset slate, with coped verges at the gable ends, which have been altered to half hips. The building has a U-plan layout, with a stair inserted between the wings at the rear, and a service wing set back at the right return.
The house has two storeys and five bays, all featuring 12-pane sash windows. The central entrance has a pedimented Tuscan Doric doorcase with six-panel double doors. On the left return, there is a 20th-century full-height steel casement bay. The rear elevation has two storeys with an attic, quoins, and an irregular rusticated surround to a central full-height glazed stair light. There is also an elliptical-headed doorway with a rusticated surround and a 20th-century door, with the service wing set at right angles.
The entrance was moved to the rear elevation when the stair was inserted, likely in the 1920s, making the main elevation the garden front. A mounting block is located on the rear elevation. The building was formerly known as Lowton House.
