Description
Leigh Hill Gate and Crib Close is a detached cottage that dates back to the 17th century, with later modifications. The building is constructed of roughcast on stone and cob, with one gable on the west side made of coursed rubble. It features a hipped thatched roof, with one early field-stone chimney stack and one later 20th-century brick stack. The original structure is L-shaped, with a through-way that separates the living area from the byre or farm outbuilding. A wing was added later on the west side, and the cottage is one and a half storeys tall.
The elevations display a mix of 2 or 3-light casement windows, primarily made of steel. On the east side, there are two windows with eyebrows above the thatch and a small 2-light casement in an eyebrow on the south wing. A plank door is located between a 3-light casement and a late 20th-century French door on the east front. This side also features two large square openings, one on the far left with a plank door and the other blocked. Above these openings is a date stone inscribed roughly with "William Allen 1738". There is also a reported date of 1609 or 1669 associated with the central stack. On the west side, there is another plank door in a large square opening beneath a small light in an eyebrow.
Inside, the cottage retains some original roof timbers, a few rough chamfered beams, and one modified fire opening under a timber bressumer supported by timber posts as cheeks, although the one to the right may have been added later. The floor in the southern wing is made of broken lias slabs.
