Description
This farmhouse, now a dwelling, likely dates to the late 16th or early 17th century, with subsequent alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries and a restoration in the late 20th century. It is constructed of chert random rubble, with rendering on the right return and around the dormers. The roof is thatched, half-hipped to the right, and continues as a catslide, forming a verandah on the south front of the west wing. Brick stacks are set back from the gable end to the left and to the right of the entrance. The building follows a T-plan, with the original section believed to be an open hall running north-south, an east wing as a kitchen, and a west wing likely used for agricultural purposes. It is one and a half storeys high, with one bay on the front of the building and two bays on the other, including a 20th century window in the gable end of the west wing, unlit below. Eyebrow dormers contain 18th-century wooden 3-light leaded casements, with 20th-century replacements below. A single-story gabled porch, with a 20th-century studded plank door, sits centrally. A low-pitched, slate-roofed two-story wing is at the rear. The interior is said to contain collar beam trusses and a steeply chamfered compartment occupying two bays to the right, with an opening for a staircase within a turret incorporated into the rear wing. There is also a small room to the north, beyond the stack in the gable end. It has been suggested that this was originally a 17th-century open hall house, ceiled in the 18th century, but this cannot be confirmed without a detailed internal inspection.
