Description
Aplens is a farmhouse, now a dwelling, that likely dates from the late 17th century and incorporates an earlier 16th-century wing. It was altered in the early 19th century and restored in the late 20th century. The building features roughcast over rubble and cob, with thatched roofs. There are rendered stacks on the left gable end and to the right of the entrance, as well as a brick stack rising from the eaves in the kitchen wing.
The structure is L-shaped and is situated on a site that slopes away to the east. It has three cells and a cross passage facing north, with an agricultural building abutting the west, which is not included in this listing. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a façade with one bay on the left and four bays overall. The left side features a three-light ovolo moulded mullioned window under the catslide of the wing, and there are three steeply chamfered mullioned dormer windows flanking an inserted 12-pane stair window above the entrance. To the right, there is a remaining similar three-light dormer, a 20th-century window on the ground floor of the wing, and a nine-pane sash window to the left of a plank door, which is topped by a thatched-roofed porch. The right side has another three-light steeply chamfered mullioned window.
The left return, or east front, has three bays, a steep raking buttress, and a three-light octagonal mullioned dormer. Below this, there is an early 19th-century three-light leaded iron casement window to the right, along with a similar steeply chamfered window on the west front of the wing. Although the interior was not seen, it is said to contain chamfered beams with scroll stops in the main block, which has a collar and principal roof, and a large chamfered transverse beam with deep stepped run-outs in the wing. The agricultural building that has been converted to a dwelling, known as Aplens Cottage, is not included in this listing.
