Description
A farmhouse, now a cottage with an adjoining barn, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, with alterations made subsequently and the loss of an end bay in the mid-20th century. The walls are roughcast over a cob and rubble construction, with a steeply pitched roof covered in Bridgwater patent tiles. One wing has triple Roman tiles. There is a rebuilt brick stack at the left gable end, a 20th-century brick stack in the centre, and a tall brick stack rising from the eaves on the left return of the wing. The building may have originally been a double-ended open hall house, which was not ceiled and was later converted to a barn and agricultural use, with a kitchen wing added. It is two storeys high, with a single-storey cross wing on the left. The left gable end has a 3-light window with ovolo moulded mullions. The first floor on the right has a 2-light window, and below it is a 4-light mullioned and transomed window. The lower portion of the window is ovolo moulded with an old sill. The upper lights have a hood mould above pressed additions. To the right are full-height 20th-century double barn doors. An entrance is located on the left return of the wing via a projecting 20th-century glazed porch addition. The interior of a visible 17th-century door frame is present. The right return has a steeply chamfered 2-light mullioned stair window. On the rear elevation, remnants of a 3-light ovolo moulded mullioned window remain. The interior of the barn was sighted. The right wall has been rebuilt with some visible cob. The left end wall exhibits timber framing, with collar and principal trusses having a smoke blackened appearance. The cob infill includes some later lias at ground floor level.
