Description
The Battlements is a building that was originally a school and is now a house. It was constructed by the Chisholm-Batten family in the early to mid-19th century and was enlarged in the late 19th century. The exterior is roughcast over rubble with slate roofs behind crenellations and parapets, and there are brick stacks at the rear.
The building has a double pile plan with an addition on the right side and is designed in a castellated picturesque style. It is two storeys high and features a façade with a 2:1:2 bay arrangement. The first gabled centre bay projects forward and is adorned with pinnacles and a coat of arms at the apex. On the first floor, the left side has two many-paned pointed arch casements beneath a hoodmould, the centre has a 12-pane sash window also under a hoodmould, and the right side has two 4-pane sash windows under a single hoodmould.
On the ground floor, the left side features two pointed arch casements under a hoodmould, while the right side has a 4-light mullioned window under a hoodmould. The centre of the ground floor has a crenellated projecting doorcase with a semi-circular arched opening. There are also two blind window openings under hoodmoulds on the left end bay, and beneath the lower crenellated roof line on the left, there are two pointed arch casements under a hoodmould, accompanied by a similar projecting crenellated doorcase with a semi-circular arched head door. The layout suggests there were probably separate entrances for boys and girls.
