Description

The Old School House is a house that has been converted into a school. It dates from the mid-18th century, with some additions made in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a hipped Welsh slate roof. It has a chamfered plinth, sill and first floor bands, rusticated quoins, and keystoned heads above the main openings. There are two side wall stacks and a single gable coped brick stack. The structure is two storeys high and consists of five bays.

The south front has a projecting three-bay center that includes a moulded ashlar doorcase with a pulvinated frieze, two-leaf fielded panelled doors, and an overlight. This is flanked by round-headed sash windows and, to the left, a flat-headed sash window. Above the door, there is a segmental-headed sash window with a Gibbs surround and a dummy balustrade, with two 18th and 19th-century sashes on either side, although the far-right sash is blocked. Each end of the building features a central round-headed blank recess, flanked by flat-headed recesses.

The rear elevation, facing the street, has a projecting center with a pilastered and corniced wooden doorcase, a four-panelled door, and an overlight. The fenestration is regular, with glazing bar sashes, four of which are blocked. The two-storey mid-19th-century addition at the southeast corner is not considered to have special architectural interest.
