Description

Maldon Court School is an early to mid-19th century house, later used as a school. It is constructed of painted brick with a low-pitched slate roof, featuring two large Gault brick stacks, three rendered stacks, and dentilled brick eaves. The main facade has a six-window range, with five plain sash windows and a small sash window on the first floor. A segmental-arched recessed porch and a plain doorway are on the ground floor, alongside two 19th-century windows. A two-storey lean-to block and a curved conservatory are situated on the south-east flank, within the re-entrant angle of the main block. Flanking all blocks are flat parapets that curve downwards toward the frontages. The rear, north-east elevation facing the garden has a parapet with a string band below, and recessed bays on each flank, each with curved-down parapets, a plain sash window to the first floor, and a door at the south-east end. The main rear section features a central semicircular sash window on the first floor with margin glazing and a plain tripartite sash window either side. The ground floor of the rear has a central, early 19th-century doorcase with pilasters, a convex-curved hood, and a plain rectangular fanlight. Either side are mid-19th century canted bay windows with sash windows on each face, and decorative slate hipped roofs with cast-iron crestings, likely representing the original front elevation. A two-storey 19th-century extension, with a slate roof and plain sash windows, connects to 20th-century flat-roofed extensions on the north-west side. The interior retains some early and mid-19th century architectural details.
