Description
No. 7 Silver Street is a house that has been converted into a hostel. It dates from the early 19th century but has earlier origins. The building is timber-framed and rendered, featuring a low-pitched front roof covered with Welsh slate and a steeper rear slope made of plain tiles. The roof is continuous with the adjacent properties at Nos. 5, 9, and 11.
The house is two storeys high and has a one-window range. There is a rear extension that is set at right angles and has a half-hipped plain tile roof. The front elevation includes one 16-pane sash window on the first floor. The ground floor has part ashlared walls, a 16-pane sash window, and a doorcase with a flat hood supported by consoles. The door itself has two glazed panels over two moulded panels and two flush panels at the base. There is a ledge of tiles at the first-floor level.
The rear extension is clad in black weatherboarding and features a sash window with a central vertical glazing bar in the west wall, along with a tall, thin chimney stack. Beyond this, there is a monopitch-roofed single-storey rear extension that has a tall brick stack. Originally, No. 11 was a single-storey building that was later raised to form a dwelling.
Inside, the rear extension has a tie beam at the first-floor level, with a late 17th-century or early 18th-century bridging joist that has a lambs-tongue chamfer. This area may have once served as outbuildings or market stalls.
