Description

15 Silver Street is a house that dates from the 17th and 18th centuries, with earlier origins. It is timber-framed and plastered, with the front featuring ashlar stonework. The roof extends to form hips over the adjacent properties, Nos. 13 and 17, and there is a truncated stack on the north-west corner.

The house has two storeys with an attic and a three-window range, along with rear extensions. On the first floor, there are two 12-pane sash windows and one 8-pane sash window, all with moulded surrounds. The ground floor features two similar 12-pane sashes and an open-pedimented Tuscan doorcase, which includes a frieze of fluting and Adamesque paterae. The door has two glazed top lights and four raised-and-fielded panels, accessed by two stone steps and 20th-century wrought-iron handrails. The rear of the house has a large gabled dormer and a full-width lean-to roof made of Welsh slate, along with a low-pitched gabled roof of 19th-century Welsh slate.

Inside, the layout suggests a 17th-century rebuilding of a former open hall and stack, creating a baffle-entry plan. There are two boxed spine beams over the ground-floor room and a late 18th-century staircase in the rear lean-to. The interior features many 18th-century doors, architraves, and cupboards. An early 18th-century sash window with wide glazing bars is located in the rear wall, and the rear door to the stairs has a heavy brass lock still in place. The roof structure includes side purlins, and the attic spans over Nos. 13, 15, and 17, featuring arched collars. This house also incorporates part of a late medieval cross-wing to the north, which is largely found in No. 17 and has soffit-tenoned floor joists.
