Description

The Old Schoolhouse is a house that was formerly a schoolhouse, likely built in the 18th century, with a 19th-century addition at the left end and a late 19th to early 20th-century rear wing. The main block is constructed of colourwashed rendered cob and stone rubble, topped with a thatched roof that has gables at both ends and features end stacks with brick shafts. The left end addition has a tiled roof and stack, while the rear wing is made of brick and also has a stack. The overall plan is T-shaped, with the main block being single depth and consisting of two or three rooms wide, featuring an axial passage that runs parallel to the front wall. The left end addition is a single-storey structure, while the rear wing is two storeys high.

The exterior is two storeys tall, with the single-storey block at the left end. The main block has an asymmetrical three-window front, with the thatch eaves eyebrowed over the first-floor windows. There is a lean-to porch to the left of centre, which has a tiled roof supported by posts, and a 19th-century panelled front door with glazed top panels. The windows are small pane timber casements from the 19th and 20th centuries. The interior has not been inspected. The building has group value with the thatched cottages located at the Powderham entrance to Powderham Castle.
