Description

Nos. 1 and 3 Church Road are a pair of estate cottages dating from the early 19th century. They are constructed from colourwashed rendered cob and stone rubble, topped with a thatched roof that is hipped at the ends. The cottages feature end stacks and a rear right lateral stack. The design is in the cottage ornee style, consisting of a single-depth plan with one room in each cottage, and later rear additions.

The exterior is single-storey with an attic and has a symmetrical four-window front. The central entrance features plank front doors with rectangular fanlights that have glazing bars, along with gabled porch hoods adorned with curly bargeboards and timber pendants. There are canted bay windows with small-pane 19th-century timber casements on either side, each covered by thatched roofs. Above, four first-floor gabled half dormers have peaked thatched roofs, curly bargeboards, and timber pendants.

Later single-storey rear additions include two plastic windows on the right side of the addition for the right-hand cottage. The interior has not been inspected. The cottages have group value with Verbena Cottage and are located at the entrance to Powderham Castle.
