Description
Vergers Cottage is a small house dating to the 1890s. It is constructed from grey limestone rubble with red brick dressings and has a slate roof with deep eaves, gabled at the ends. It incorporates elements of Gothic and Vernacular Revival styles. The layout is in an "L" shape, with two blocks set at right angles to each other. The main entrance is on the south side, leading into the front block. A garage, which may have been adapted from a service block, is situated to the right and slightly forward of the house. The front gables of both the main range and the garage are ornamented with half-timbering. The front elevation has an asymmetrical arrangement with a single window. The original plank front door is located to the right of the main range. Original two-light timber windows with cranked heads, transoms, and glazing bars – including small panes above the transoms – are present throughout. The left return also features original windows, including a small first-floor oriel supported on carved, Jacobean-style brackets. The interior has not been inspected. The house holds group value with Powderham Church, which stands directly opposite.
